Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of getting your website cited and surfaced inside AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Gemini — instead of just ranking on a page of blue links.

What is generative engine optimization?

Search is shifting from a list of links to a single generated answer. When someone asks an AI engine “what’s the best tool for X?”, the model writes one paragraph and names a handful of sources. If your site isn’t among them, you don’t get the click — and often the user never sees a results page at all.

GEO is the discipline of earning those mentions: making your pages readable, quotable and trustworthy to the models that assemble the answer. It overlaps with SEO but optimizes for a different consumer — a language model that renders, reads and summarizes, rather than a ranking algorithm that lists.

The term was coined in 2023 research and has since become the umbrella for a fast-moving set of practices. The fundamentals, though, are concrete and testable — which is the whole point of this page.

GEO vs. SEO — what actually changes

GEO doesn’t replace SEO; it sits on top of it. The classic fundamentals still matter, but a few priorities shift when your reader is a model, not a results page.

The levers of GEO

Most of GEO comes down to a handful of concrete levers. The first one is the one most tools miss — and it’s where the real gap usually hides.

Real rendering — can the model even read your page?

AI crawlers often fetch only the raw server HTML. If your content loads via JavaScript, the model sees an empty skeleton and can’t cite what it can’t read. Rendering your page the way a browser (and Google’s renderer) does is the single most decisive — and most overlooked — GEO check. This is where a diagnosis has to start.

Quotable structure (AEO)

Answer engines lift the passages that are easiest to quote: question-style headings, TL;DR summaries, ranked lists, comparison tables and clear definitions. Structure your key answers so a model can extract one clean, self-contained sentence.

Entity trust & grounding

Models trust entities they can resolve. Consistent naming, an Organization/sameAs graph, a Wikidata/Wikipedia presence and structured data help the engine connect your brand to a known, trustworthy entity rather than an ambiguous string.

Crawler access & citable signals

Make sure answer bots can reach you (robots/llms.txt, no accidental blocks) and give them citable, factual claims with clear sourcing. Freshness and unambiguous statements make a passage safer for a model to repeat.

How deeploupe measures your GEO

deeploupe runs the levers above as an actual, evidenced audit — not a checklist you have to interpret. It renders your page the way the AI sees it, runs a live citation test against real engines, and checks the structural and trust signals that decide whether you get quoted.

You get the proof, not a vague score: the rendered view, the actual answer text, and a prioritized fix list with why + how.

  • Real rendering — your page as a bot loads it, desktop & mobile
  • Live citation test with the actual answer text as proof
  • Structured data, llms.txt, entity/sameAs and answer-format checks
  • Classic SEO fundamentals underneath, prioritized with fixes

FAQ

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO is optimizing your website to be cited and surfaced inside AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, rather than only ranking in classic search results.
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No — GEO builds on SEO. Classic fundamentals still matter, but GEO optimizes for a language model that renders and summarizes your page, so rendering, quotable structure and entity trust move to the front.
How is GEO different from AEO?
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is often used interchangeably with GEO. In practice AEO emphasizes the answer-format structure (getting your passage quoted), while GEO is the broader umbrella that also covers rendering, entity trust and crawler access.
How do I know if AI engines can read my page?
Render it the way a bot does. If your content loads via JavaScript and the raw HTML is nearly empty, the model likely sees a skeleton. deeploupe’s free scan shows exactly what a bot can and can’t see on your page.
Can I check my GEO for free?
Yes. deeploupe’s free scan renders your page, runs a live citation test and reports the key GEO signals — no signup, no credit card.
