Which OpenAI crawlers decide what ChatGPT can read
OpenAI uses three user agents with different jobs (documentation checked 16 September 2026, linked on the token). For ChatGPT search, OAI-SearchBot is the one that counts.

- Which AI does the free check use?
- Real ChatGPT via OpenAI’s official API with live web search. Popular questions are pre-tested for instant results; rarer ones run live. When the daily budget is reached we fall back to Google AI (Gemini) and label it honestly — never Gemini under a ChatGPT label. - Why does the result change if I run it again?
- AI answers vary between runs — that’s exactly why a single free run is a snapshot. The paid report runs each query 5–7 times and reports a citation rate with a confidence interval.
- Do I need to sign up?
- No. The free check needs no account and no credit card.
- Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?
- With web search, ChatGPT builds its answer from pages it finds for that question, for example comparison articles, directories or reviews. If those pages name a competitor and not you, the answer tends to follow them. The check lists the cited sources, which is the most concrete place to start: are you missing from those pages, or can the AI not read your own site?
- Does blocking GPTBot keep my business out of ChatGPT?
- Not by itself, according to OpenAI. GPTBot collects content for training, OAI-SearchBot finds pages for ChatGPT search, and OpenAI says the two settings are independent. A bot block in your server or CDN can hit both. The free GPTBot check tests your robots.txt and a live GPTBot request.
