What is AI referral traffic?
AI referral traffic is visits to a website that originate from a link in an AI answer, for example from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot or Gemini. It is the only visibility metric you can measure directly in your own web analytics, but it captures clicks, not mentions.
When someone clicks a linked source in an AI answer, they land on the target page. Depending on the app and browser a referrer is passed along, and some applications add campaign parameters such as utm_source to the link themselves. That lets analytics tools attribute such visits to an AI source.
Coverage has gaps. From apps and under some privacy settings the referrer is missing, and the visit shows up as direct traffic. There is also an error in the opposite direction: if you read campaign parameters without checking whether they come from your own campaign, you may book AI visits as marketing success.
Most importantly, referral traffic captures only the smallest part of the effect. Many users read the answer, remember a name and search for the brand later directly, or not at all. Those mentions produce no click.
What it means for your website
Set up a dedicated group in your analytics for known AI referrers and AI typical utm_source values, and check which pages receive those visits. If you see an increase, look at which questions those pages are cited for. If you see none, that does not mean your brand is missing from answers, only that nobody clicked.
