What is a zero-click search?

A zero-click search is a search after which the user clicks no website, because the answer already appears on the results page or in the AI chat. Examples are weather, unit conversions, featured snippets, AI Overviews and answers from AI assistants without a follow-up click on a source.

Zero-click existed before generative AI, for opening hours, short definitions or sports scores shown directly in search. With AI answers it affects more queries, because explanatory and comparative questions are answered directly too.

For businesses this shifts what success looks like. A mention in the answer text can have an effect without showing up as a visit in web analytics. Counting only clicks misses that effect. On the other hand, there is no solid evidence on how much a mention without a click influences a later purchase decision.

Figures on the share of zero-click searches almost always come from vendors with their own panels and are hard to compare across studies, because they measure differently.

What it means for your website

For a website this means watching, alongside clicks and visits, whether the brand is named in answers and whether visitors later arrive directly or through brand searches. Both signals are indirect and cannot be tied to a single AI answer. An honest evaluation names that gap instead of filling it with an estimate. To see a direction anyway, compare brand search trends over several months with documented mentions in AI answers.
