What is an AI visibility score?
An AI visibility score is a vendor calculated metric that condenses a brand’s visibility in AI answers into a single value. There is no shared standard: each tool sets its own formula, question list and weighting, usually without disclosing them.
Scores are convenient because they look good in reports and dashboards. But they contain several decisions you cannot see from the outside: which questions were asked, which engines count, how mention, source and position are weighted, and how often measurement took place. Apply different formulas to the same raw data and you get different values.
Criticism of the category starts right here. Practitioners compare these scores to earlier vanity metrics that one vendor defines, measures and sells optimization services against. No neutral, recognized standard for the calculation exists so far.
On top of that, the answers themselves fluctuate. A point value without a stated sample size and uncertainty suggests a precision the measurement cannot deliver.
What it means for your website
Use a score at most as a trend within the same tool and an unchanged question list, never to compare vendors. Ask for the questions, the number of runs and the formula. If you want to decide what to do, you need the wording of the answers: which brands are named, which sources are cited, and whether your own page is readable for the engine at all.
