What is citation rate?
Citation rate is the share of AI answers to a defined set of questions in which a brand is named or its website is cited as a source. It is a ratio across many runs and is only as reliable as the number of questions and repetitions behind it.
The metric sounds simple: of all answers an engine gives to a list of buying questions, how many include your brand? The difficulty is the denominator. Which questions belong on the list, how often is each asked, and does a mention in the text count the same as a linked source? Each of these choices moves the ratio, and few vendors disclose them.
Two quantities often travel under the same name and should be kept apart. A brand mention means the answer says the name. A source citation means the engine used a page from the domain as evidence. Either can happen without the other, and a blended rate hides exactly that difference.
Because AI answers vary between runs, a rate built from a handful of measurements is mostly noise. A paper on uncertainty in AI visibility estimates that a confidence interval of plus or minus 5 percentage points needs roughly 40 to 50 questions on Gemini, about 100 on Perplexity and more than 150 on SearchGPT.
What it means for your website
When someone reports a citation rate to you, ask three things: which questions were used, how many runs per question, and whether mentions and sources were counted separately. Without those details the number cannot be compared, not even with itself next month. A single run is not a rate but evidence of what that one answer contained.
