What is a brand mention in an AI answer?

A brand mention occurs when an AI answer explicitly states the name of a vendor, product or brand in its text. It is a different quantity from a source citation, where the engine uses a page from a domain as evidence without necessarily saying the name.

For someone asking an AI for a vendor, what matters first is which names appear in the answer. Those names end up on the shortlist. The sources an engine links below or beside the answer are the pages it drew its knowledge from. They can be comparison articles, directories or trade portals that are not vendors at all.

The two often diverge. A brand can be named because a comparison article covers it, while its own website is never cited. Conversely, a domain can serve as a source, for example with a guide, while the answer recommends other vendors. Analytics tools such as Peec AI therefore report brand visibility and source visibility as separate metrics.

Blending both into one number reads sources as competitors and misses the case where an engine reads your page but recommends a different name.

What it means for your website

For any report, check whether it counts names in the answer text or linked domains. For your own site the most revealing combination is the one where your domain shows up as a source but your name is not said: the engine reads your content but does not attribute it to your brand. deeploupe’s free ChatGPT check shows named brands and cited sources as separate lists for that reason.
