What is an entity?

An entity is a uniquely identifiable thing, such as a company, person, place or product, that a search engine or language model can distinguish from things with the same name. A brand recognised as an entity is confused less often.

Google popularised the idea with the Knowledge Graph under the motto “things, not strings”: rather than only matching character strings, search should understand which thing is meant. A brand called “Vorly” is then something other than a village of the same name.

For AI answers this is more than a detail. A model that cannot separate a small brand from a word or another company names it wrongly or not at all. Signals that help are a consistent name on your own website, an unambiguous organisation description, profiles on other platforms and mentions in independent sources.

An entry in knowledge bases such as Wikidata can help but is bound to notability criteria. Self-created entries without independent references get deleted there and are not a way to write an entity into existence.

What it means for your website

A simple test: enter your brand name alone into an AI search and read what comes back. If the answer describes another company or a place, the disambiguation is missing. Clear self-description, consistent profiles and referenced third-party mentions then help more than additional markup.
