What is FAQ schema?
FAQ schema refers to the Schema.org FAQPage markup that labels a page’s questions and answers in machine-readable form. Google has removed the related rich result from Search; the type itself still exists and does not need to be deleted.
For a long time FAQ markup made expandable questions appear below a search result. Google had restricted that display to few sites years ago and, according to Search Engine Journal, has now removed it from Search entirely, including the Search Console report and API support.
The distinction matters: the display is gone, not the vocabulary. FAQPage remains a valid Schema.org type. Unused but correct markup does not cause a penalty. Removing existing FAQ markup therefore brings nothing measurably positive and is more likely to introduce errors during a rebuild.
For AI answers the same applies as for structured data in general: evidence that FAQ markup increases citations is missing. What plausibly helps is the shape of the content itself, meaning clear questions with direct, self-contained answers in the visible text.
What it means for your website
Do not add new FAQ markup expecting extra search real estate. Where it already exists and the page answers real questions, it can stay. Writing the answers so that the first sentence holds up without context is the more promising investment.
