On the influence of writing there is one of the few controlled studies in the field: the paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (KDD 2024) tested different rewrites of source texts on its own benchmark and reports a visibility increase of up to 40 percent in generated answers, with clear differences by domain. Citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics worked best; breaking text into short sections was not one of the tested changes.
The results come from a test environment, not from ChatGPT or Perplexity in everyday use. They are still more robust than most claims in this area, because there was a comparison group.
What it means for your website
In practice: put evidence into the text, meaning numbers with sources, verbatim quotations and links to original sources, and explain terms on first use. Set paragraphs and subheadings so people can read the text well; as an AI lever this is not proven, and according to Google there is no need to rewrite content just for AI. Whether a page gets named only shows up in a test with real questions.
