What is a citable passage?
A citable passage is a short section of text that answers a question completely without relying on the rest of the page. AI search often extracts individual sections; a self-contained section is more likely to be carried over correctly than a scattered thought.
Answer engines work with excerpts. They retrieve matching pages, split them into sections and compose an answer from the most relevant ones. A sentence like “as described above” loses its meaning because the “above” does not come along.
On the influence of writing there is one of the few controlled studies in the field: the paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (KDD 2024) tested different rewrites of source texts on its own benchmark and reports a visibility increase of up to 40 percent in generated answers, with clear differences by domain. Helpful changes included citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics.
The results come from a test environment, not from ChatGPT or Perplexity in everyday use. They are still more robust than most claims in this area, because there was a comparison group.
What it means for your website
In practice: one heading per question, the direct answer first in one or two sentences, then reasoning and evidence. Give numbers with sources, explain terms on first use and avoid pronouns at the start of a paragraph. Whether a page gets named afterwards only shows up in a test with real questions.
