What is a listicle?
A listicle is an article in list form, such as “The ten best CRM tools”. In AI search such rankings are among the most frequently cited sources, which is why being included in third-party lists can be an important route to mentions in AI answers.
According to an analysis by the GEO vendor Evertune of nearly 400 million citations across AI models, 63 percent pointed to listicles. That is a vendor’s own claim, from a company that benefits from this narrative, not an independent study. The direction does match what you see for buying-intent questions: engines like pages that have already ranked several providers.
Part of these lists are written by vendors who put themselves in first place. In its own study of 232,000 citations, Peec AI classified around 11 percent as self-promotional listicles, with large differences by engine; for ChatGPT the share was much lower at 3.6 percent. That is also a vendor study.
For assessment this means: if you are missing from cited lists, you are often missing from the answer too. A list of your own in which you rank yourself first, however, is easy to see through and can cost trust.
What it means for your website
It makes sense to check which lists the engines cite for your own buying-intent questions and to ask for inclusion there with a verifiable differentiator. Your own comparison pages should stay fair, give prices with date and source, and not present competitors worse than the evidence supports.
