What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a mode of Google Search in which users ask questions conversationally and receive a detailed AI-generated answer with links to web sources. Unlike AI Overviews, AI Mode is a separate view that supports follow-up questions on the same topic.
For AI Mode, as for AI Overviews, Google describes a technique called query fan-out. The system splits a question into several subqueries, searches them in parallel and combines the results into one answer. As a result, pages can appear as sources that would not rank on the first results page for the original question.
According to Google Search Central, the requirements for a page are the same as for regular search. The page must be reachable for Googlebot, indexed and eligible for a snippet. There are no extra files, special markup or separate sign-up.
Measuring AI Mode is hard because answers can be personalized and depend on the conversation. A follow-up question changes which sources are used.
What it means for your website
For a website, what counts in AI Mode is topical breadth with substance. Because the system searches subquestions, pages that answer adjacent questions on their own help, such as cost, comparison, requirements and common problems. Mentions can only be checked with real queries, documented with date and wording. Record a follow-up question in the same conversation separately, since it changes which sources get picked.
