What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows for some searches above or within the regular results. They answer the query in a short text and link the web pages the information comes from. The feature is part of Google Search, not a separate product.
Google does not show AI Overviews on every search; it decides per query whether a summary is helpful. The linked pages come from the Google Search index. A page that is not indexed or not reachable for Googlebot cannot appear there as a source.
Google Search Central states explicitly that there are no additional requirements for appearing in AI Overviews. There is no special markup and no dedicated file. The usual foundations apply: the page is indexable, offers content people find helpful and meets the technical requirements for a regular search result.
In Search Console, clicks and impressions from AI Overviews are reported together with regular web search data. There is no separate report for this feature there.
What it means for your website
To appear in AI Overviews, start with indexing and with clear, well-supported answers to your audience's questions. Whether your page gets linked can only be checked on the real results page, and the result can differ by location, account and time. A screenshot with date and search term keeps a record of what was seen, which matters because the same query can look different a day later.
