What is Googlebot?
Googlebot is the crawler Google uses to fetch web pages and add them to its search index. That index also underpins the AI features in Google Search, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. Blocking Googlebot removes a site from search and therefore from those features too.
In discussions about AI visibility, Googlebot is often forgotten because the focus is on GPTBot and ClaudeBot. For Google, though, the AI features in search draw on the same index as the classic results. Google states that you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in these features.
That makes Googlebot a prerequisite. A page that is not crawled or not indexed cannot appear as a source in AI Overviews. The separate Google-Extended token does not change this; it concerns Gemini training and grounding outside of search.
Googlebot renders JavaScript, but not necessarily right away. Content that only loads in the browser often becomes visible to Google later than the raw HTML text. For other AI crawlers that do not execute JavaScript, it stays invisible altogether.
What it means for your website
Use Google Search Console to check that your key pages are indexed. Make sure robots.txt and your firewall do not lock Googlebot out, and that a page’s core statements are already in the delivered HTML. The deeploupe render gap report shows how often exactly that is missing on small business websites.
