What is content freshness?

Content freshness describes how recent and up to date a page is and whether that is recognisable to readers and machines. For AI search with live retrieval it can influence which source is chosen for a time-sensitive question.

Language models have a knowledge cutoff where their training data ends. When they search the web live, they supplement that knowledge with retrieved pages. For questions whose answer changes, such as prices, offers or legal matters, a visibly current source is a more natural choice than an outdated one.

Google recommends showing the publication and update date visibly on the page and also in structured data, and warns against bumping dates without a real content change. A new date alone does not make a page more current.

No provider discloses how strongly answer engines weight freshness. Claims such as “AI prefers content younger than a certain age” are usually observations by individual tool vendors without a control group. What holds up is this: outdated information leads to wrong answers, and those reflect on the provider.

What it means for your website

Pages with time-sensitive details should carry a visible review date and actually be revised when things change. Prices and figures belong with their date and source. To see whether an engine still repeats old details, ask the matching question and compare the answer with the current state of the page.
